Winchester Alumni Association Have a Record Turnout for Big Ruthie Fundraiser
By Scott Shaffer
News Gazette
On Saturday, fans of a classic sandwich from Winchester's past turned out in droves at
the Phi Delt's Clubhouse to enjoy a meal and help out a local non-profit organization.
The Winchester Alumni Association, in association with Phi Delta Kappa, held their Big Ruthie
fund raising dinner on Saturday, where a record 270 guests were treated to the locally famous
Big Ruthie sandwich in exchange for their donation.
The "Big Ruthie" is a large deep fried pork tenderloin named in honor of the former Ruth
Ann Odle, now Ruth Price, who was a cook at the former Reeves Cafe in downtown Winchester
for 17 years. Thicker than the typical breaded pork tenderloin, the "Big Ruthie" is also beer battered.
The sandwich's namesake also made an appearance at the dinner sporting a shirt that
declared her "The Original Big Ruthie.'
The Winchester Alumni Association holds the dinners once per year. Proceeds
go to help fund the activities and scholarships to graduating seniors from Winchester
Community High School. By simply enjoying a meal anyone can contribute to
helping Randolph County students further their education. The Alumni Association would like to
thank all of those who attended for their support of future scholarships.
